Belvedere Palace in Vienna is one of Austria’s most important sights – second only to Schönbrunn. Together with Vienna’s city center, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts millions of visitors every year.
The magnificent palace complex was built in the early 18th century by the famous Baroque architect Lucas von Hildebrandt for the military commander Prince Eugene of Savoy, who went down in history as one of Europe’s greatest military strategists. The complex consists of the Upper and Lower Belvedere, connected by a magnificent garden.
Today, the Belvedere houses one of Europe’s most important art museums. The Austrian Gallery Belvedere displays masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the present day, including Gustav Klimt’s world-famous painting “The Kiss”, as well as works by Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, and many others.
The Belvedere is also steeped in political history: the Austrian State Treaty was signed in the Marble Hall of the Upper Belvedere in 1955 – a historic moment that marked the end of the post-war occupation.
The Austrian Belvedere Gallery is now home to Gustav Klimt’s major works and, of course, his most famous painting, “The Kiss.” Visitors from all over the world queue for hours to admire Klimt’s golden paintings. The museum displays Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the present day. Everything from Baroque to Classicism, Biedermeier, Art Nouveau, Expressionism, and Modernism can be found here.
The Upper Belvedere was once the venue for magnificent receptions and courtly festivities. Today, it houses the highlights of the collection, including the iconic painting “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt, one of the most famous works of art in the world. The striking green domes of the façade are symbolic of Ottoman tents – an architectural reference to Prince Eugene’s victories over the Ottoman Empire.
The magnificent Marble Hall is the heart of the Upper Belvedere. It was here that the State Treaty was signed in 1955, restoring Austria’s sovereignty and neutrality. The windows offer the famous Canaletto view of Vienna, inspired by the Venetian painter Bernardo Bellotto. Historical reality and artistic imagination come together here in a unique way.
The Gardens of the Belvedere connect the Upper and Lower Palaces and are among the most beautiful Baroque gardens in Europe. Terraces, fountains, hedges, and sculptures create an ideal backdrop for walks, photos, and relaxation in the middle of the city. Council Chamber back.
